The Gibraltar United Football Club is set to become the first team in football history which pays its players with cryptocurrency next season, according The Guardian.

Owner Pablo Dana invested heavily into Quantocoin so he could provide cryptocurrencies for everyday uses and has started sponsorship partnerships among other instances where athletes find unexpected ways of using cryptocurrency.

Gibraltar’s financial sector has been at the forefront of blockchain technology adoption.

They have embraced it and are leading other states in their exploration into this new form for finance, including regulations on businesses using such technologies as well an introduction coming soon regarding how they will deal with ICOs (issuances made through Blockchain).

Dana says Gibraltar United wants to increase transparency in football, believing that blockchain technology will reduce corruption that has befallen the sport.
